Back to Basso finally on Saturday after a stretch of 3 away games plus a bye. Big day for the club with the special function for the past players on and I will keeping my eyes peeled to see if I can spot any of my old heroes from the 80's. Hopefully the presence of the past Swans will inspire the current day ones to produce an extra special performance. It won't be an easy game.

Despite the Tigers being brought back to earth in the last few weeks by the two best teams in the competition, they are still a very good side and I have a lot of respect for their coach, so the Swans boys will have to be at their very best. We need to win as many home games as possible and this is one that will assist our bid for the finals if we can be in front at the end.

Some of the players who have been consistent in the reserves such as Cipro and Slater may get a look in this week depending on how the older players are going. Ellis didn't make it last week and he would be a useful addition in the forward line if fit. Weather is set fair, so it should be a entertaining game.

Hopefully Rogers should be back this week too Mike as he was missed last week.
From the Reserves last week as outlined previous Cipro is banging the door down for a League berth along with McKenzie, Maguire, Ridley, Kirkup, Slater, Erceg & Hughes whilst Yazz is slowly building his fitness base up.
A few mediocre efforts in the League team last week might see a couple of chances open up.

You know , if the WAFC group had half an Aggot between the lot of the useless , desolate pricks - they'd have pieced together a Rivalry Round here.
Given they've come up with a pure genious brainwave of only having 3 games , might have been a small glimmer of opportunity to showcase something between 2 sides that played some classics in the '80s

A Mossie-Roo Boucher reunion at Basso 35 years after their infamous stoush mate....now that should have been the 7West classic blast from the past this week but alas Basils buffoons went for a 1996 EP V CL GF highlights piece instead  wtf they are not even playing each other this week ffs! :S

Gees those SD-CL-SF battles of the early 80s were something to behold mate.
Champion ruckmen of all time in Moss & Michael taking on the back street fighter Boucher with handy back up from the high leaping Alan Sidebottom & then the young athletic Peter Sartori...aaah the memories come trickling back now! :)

Ellis and Rogers added to the squad, otherwise same team as last week. Looks a well balanced line up. A few good in's for the Tigers as well, including Tom Lee at Centre half forward which adds to their strength in the forward line. Our defence will be working overtime to control the likes of Maister, Richardson and Bradshaw as well as Lee.

The midfields look evenly matched so it is important that we have some impact at clearances because if the Claremont mids get on top they have the forwards to kick a winning score. Ames on Maister, Howard on Richardson, Notte on Lee and Grescos or Ugle on Bradshaw with Watson and Bennell being there to assist and run the ball out of defence.

Swans defensive unit has been a real strength this season, so far we have conceded on average less than 70 points per game. However they will be well and truly tested on Saturday.

One of the many brilliant Claremont v Swans battles in the early 80's was this one at Claremont Oval in Round 21 1981

waflfootyfacts.net/season/games/stats.php?GameID=6376

In front of over 18,000 people (yes 18,000), Swans led for most of the game, 27 points up at half time and 22 at three quarter time, but the Tigers came home with an 8 goal to 2 last quarter to win by 15 points. There were 42 goals in the game ( Swans losing score was 20 - 13!) Some of the participants in this game were all time greats of the club, the Krakouer brothers, Moss, Malaxos ( who kicked 6 goals), Warren Ralph, Graham Moss, Daryl Panizza and Wayne Blackwell for Claremont.
For Swans , the Narkle Brothers, Leon Baker, Mike Richardson, Gerard Neesham, Don Langsford, Graham Melrose, Stan Nowotny, Ron Boucher. The list goes on and on. No wonder it was such a great game.

Even though we lost I went away optimistic about our chances for the 1981 finals. Unfortunately as events turned out that optimism was misplaced :(

I was at that game Mike which was the record crowd at Claremont Oval. Phil Krakouer getting cleaned up seemed to inspire the Tigers that day. Unfortunately before our next game also against Claremont in the 2nd Semi we lost a few boys to injury including Mike Richardson with a broken arm and with it our Finals chances went out the window. There were some absolute classic battles between SD-CL-SF back then in that era that were the best home & away games I have ever seen.
