In his last game of league football, Parkin was knocked out. Can anyone name the other player involved? He was a ruckman, whom later played for Hawthorn -- under Parkin -- and Subiaco.

Parkin related the story on a Victorian football show a while back.

I remember Parkin interviewed on Open Mike saying he was knocked out in his last game and woke up the next day in hospital was vs Claremont.
So with your clues AR I am going to nominate Jeff Murray (ex CL, HAW, $UB) ruckman.

BH: beautifully done -- I rarelly watch those shows, but I saw that one, which was good. I did not realise Murray had played for Hawthorn, nearlly making the 1978 premiership side from all reports.

Jeff Murray played 10 games and kicked 3 goals for Hawthorn in 1978 AR which as you pointed out was a Premiership year for them. He would have been around the mark but behind Don Scott the leading ruckman at the Hawks at the time plus back ups Ian Paton, Richard Walter & Michael McCarthy who also played in that side. Pretty sure Murray played a bit of Sunday League back in the 80s after his WAFL/VFL stints. SF4L might be able to confirm that?

BH: He certainlly faced some competition at Hawthorn; it was the story of Murray's career in a way, because, he left Claremont after Moss returned form over east.

I would hazard a guess to say he probably left Subi with the emergence of Laurie Keene, Phil Scott, David Court et al as well in the early 80's AR.

my memories of Jeff Murray was that he was one of the biggest knucklemen to play the game. I think he was a former boxer and got rubbed out more than once...one of those blokes you didn't take on in a blue unless you had to.

BH I think what you say would be close to the mark, Ken Armstrong had an emphasis in those days on youth in the side. Although, given Subiaco's wretched form in that era, he might have also got sick of losing most weeks.
