Christ it's that bloody long ago I'd forgotten his East Perth beginnings boys - but there were a few eastern staters relocating in the 70's as spoken about

Don't forget 1974
Barry Cable to North Melbourne.

Michael Redenbach, Doug Farrant, Phil Doherty and David Pretty to Perth.

David Pretty tied for the Simpson Medal in the losing GF to EF

Used to be great in those days when a club could grab a player from the east or the bush and play him mid season. If your key positional player went down the player manager would get on the phone or take a drive to a farm and pick someone up. Graham Seaby & Mick Rea were two players that come to mind.

Ian Thomson - East Fremantle
Colin Waterson - Perth/East Fremantle
Bruce Tschirpig - East Fremantle/Perth
Wayne Duke - East Perth/Claremont
Ben Jager - West Perth
John Begg - Subiaco/South Fremantle

Can't remember what year Gordon Casey went to Swan Districts - might have been 1978

1976 Southy I believe he came over with Stuart Magee.
Compared to other WAFL clubs we never had too many ex VFL players over the years Darryl Sutton in 1981 was one.

After leaving the Royals at the end of 1978, I believe he was playing Sunday League when Brad Smith lured him to East Fremantle during the 1979 season.
Thommo came back to haunt the Royals when he kicked seven goals in Old Easts' two-point win in the 79 first semi.

Thomson started at East Peth in 1967 after following his brother Gordon (1963/64) to the Club.

I thought Ian Cooper from St Kilda around early 70's was a good pick up for Swans.

Subi had a run of Vic imports as captain/coaches during the 70s.

73/74 - the legendary Ross Smith
75 - David Parkin
77/78 - Brian Douge

I think they all came over primarily to enrol or work in the pre-eminent Phys Ed degree then being offered at UWA - just down the road from Subi Oval.

Gary Crouch was a Victorian who came to Subi in the early 70's and was a phys ed teacher at Balcatta High school while I was there. Also Graeme Schultz came from Essendon in 1975 and was forced to sit out the early part of the year ( waiting for a clearance) before almost winning the Sandover Medal despite only playing the last 12 games.

I recall David McKay came over from Carlton but couldn't get a clearance from memory.

Oh the days when WAFL players were gods. I remember the visits to school by players (even though they were EF players) looking up at them in awe, Cassidy was a regular :)
