Yes, Dean Herbert was an off-beat character with issues back in Victoria.
He came to Lathlain in 1976 and stayed only one season but in that time had a huge impact on winning the flag for us that year.

Don't forget Verdun Howell everybody, captain coach of the Tigers I read as a kid. Was Claremont's effort in 1972 a fluke? It was after all, just one year before the biggest fluke of all in WAFL football.

Im sure Ben Jagger came from Palmyra. He nearly played with Old Easts with his mate Mick Jez but we did get a couple of blokes, Noel Mugivan & Phill Spock Bradmore.

anchorman wrote: Southerner, we also recruited a fella called Andrew Vanderfeen. He turned into a real dud.Played like he had a broom stick suck up his ,you know where.I saw him play in a scratch match ar Fremantle oval and thought WOW, we have a ripper here.He took about 15 marks. But that turned out to be more than he took all year.
But I believe he went back to Tassie and became a legend of the game down there.

Yeah I do remember him - came over the same time as Mark Jackson
He was 18 I think and way way out of his depth I thought - but in real honest fairness WA footy was bloody strong in that era and a few defenders sorted him out pretty quickly

Another bloke that came over was Enzo Corvino to Subiaco - this little guy teamed up with Catoggio and seemed a reasonable player , disappeared entirely from the footy planet by the end of his first season there

Russell Ellen came from Essendon. We also picked Brian Perrin. Correct me if im wrong. West Perth picked up Peter Murnane the same season that Gary Buckenara went to Hawthorn. I believe Subiaco wouldnt release Buckennara. Its always intrigued me, why didnt Subiaco get Murnane and do a swap. Murnane apparently walked into Leederville oval and the rest is history.

Southerner, Ian Thomson was actually an East Perth player before and after his South Melbourne career.
After leaving the Royals at the end of 1978, I believe he was playing Sunday League when Brad Smith lured him to East Fremantle during the 1979 season.
Thommo came back to haunt the Royals when he kicked seven goals in Old Easts' two-point win in the 79 first semi.

I can remember seeing Thompson playing with East Perth and East Fremantle. Im sure he played full forward/ center half forward.
