In the big days Marlboro provided prize money and Premiership was called the Marlboro Cup for a while. At its peak it was worth $50,000, it included prize money for the team that was on top of the ladder at certain points in the season. that would of ended 82 83 or so.

I think when Pepsi came in the offered $10,000 at one stage, late 80s that was last time I know there was prize money.

Apart from that the pre season cup had prize money, the Kresta Cup was worth a few grand.

Not sure what you mean Leedy, non participants we are all followers of the WAFL and the clubs and I just wanted to know how clubs would use the money. I know we would go out an buy a player or two if tradition holds true.

Also Grump, on the odd occasion individual club sponsors would offer premiership bonus incentives, eg I think Western Underwriters paid Subi a fair bit for winning.

I wonder how excited WPFootballCommission players would be to get 4% of any such incentive.

Nowadays, the answer is no.
In previous years of the 70's & 80's there was some prize money from various club sponsors etcetera.
I remember the old Foxtel Cup had prize money.
Other sports have prizemoney for appearing in a Grand Final like the Rugby. And fairly certain the NRL have prize money for also winning the minor premiership. The recent World Cup soccer had a large prize for the winning team too.
As for the Wafl, it doesn't currently happen.

Got me stuffed , Twiggy Forrest is always big mouthing about how great a WA person he is , yet is has zero interest in this states oldest original sporting comp, imagine if he came out and said im prepared to sponsor the WAFL as the FMG Cup for 1 Million to the finals teams,

$250,000 Runners Up
$150,000 Third
$100,00 Fourth.

Too true Bazza instead he pours squillions into some lame brain non event English invented game rugby comp featuring sides from Tonga, Samoa and such but have never seen him put a dime into our OWN INDIGENOUS SPORT AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL here in his home state of WA! Same goes for Hancock/Rinehart, Wright & co!
