Who were folks favourite reserves players over the years.....players who played more reserves than league.. never seemed to get the nod despite some decent games week in week out....

Jonny Claesson, Paul Bennett, Robbie Hooker and a fella from the NT in Ninny Briston were some of my favourite EF boys over the years......all were consistently in the best playing reserves footy just never seem to get the nod to play league.

From Swans in the early 80s Gavin Outridge, Peter Hodyl, Chris Burgess, Vince Reid, Alby & Michael (not #25 Mike) Smith we’re always consistently good in the Ressies without cracking a regular League game although the former 2 eventually played in a deserved League Premiership Hodyl in his second stint at Swans actually Captained our 1990 flag with Brad Shine out injured.

BH there was another Swans Ressie player from that era.Who Captained / Coached Dianella Panthers/Morley Bulldogs.Terry Holtsman.Winger, Midfielder Athletic build and a killer left foot kick.Would of been a 150 game Swans player in any other era.

Was at Dianella when Terry was there, said he played one league game at Swans under Todd ,got the three Sandover medal votes that game, was dropped the week after, never played league again, was very good for Dianella.

Brilliant one GTR he was a consistently good Reserves player for us in the mid 80s but just couldn’t crack a regular League berth I think he only played 1 League game in Round 21 1985 and played very well that day but lost his place for the 1st Semi the next week vs WP.
I remember we often remarked back then he was unlucky not too have played more.
A couple of others from that era were Ric Ellard, Hoyer, Egan, Scheer, Jeffery, Hemmings, Carter, Nuich, Werner, Maiden, Gray, Cope, Moss and from the 90s David Callow, Glynn Rattray, Stevens, Foote, Jordan, Castledine, B.Walker...

He was spot on PN Terry Holtzman was a classy left footer only lightly built for a six footer and one of the unluckiest players in my time following Swans.

Peter I wasn't at the Panthers. But played for Morley with the Western Bulldogs jumpers. Remember Dianella had a top 3 bgrade side and Morley had a top 3 D grade side. But the merger went to shit.I lived and still do a couple of hundred metres from Light St reserve.Remember quiet big crowds watching Dianella B and big roars from a 500 odd crowd.Use to remember Holtsman making an entrance.Had a real cool British Sports Car.Stag or MG or maby a Jaguar .

A few good names there Freeze you could probably throw Timmy Zoehrer into that mix.
As an opposition supporter some names from other clubs that from afar seemed unlucky not to play more League footy were-

CL- Alan Rowe, Foulkes, Barns, Clay & Cam Lewis, D.Farmer
EF- Chatfield, Rogers, Mitchell, Clucas, Trott, Miller, Zoehrer
EP- Blakely, Seal, Cox, Coutts, Malcolm, G.Williams, Capriotti
PE- Ashworth, Armstrong, Bell, Doyle, Chute
SF- Stokes, W.Hardie, Sadlier, Beard
SU- Lee, P & D.Wilson, Thomas, Tucker, Perry, Bengough, Steinepreis,
WP- Dayman, Davis, Avery, Pola, Hathaway, Campbell, McEvoy

*Robbie Hooker, Guy Baxter- EF & PE

GTR when I played there the merger had already happened the year before and became the Dianella/morley Raiders , b: grade played in four prelims in a row but never made the GF, yeah used to get a decent crowd , also had four senior sides you couldn't move in the club rooms selection night, DM won the first flag since the merger last year. 38 years ago.
