{xtypo_dropcap}T{/xtypo_dropcap}here have been many good players who seemed destined for champion status but injury struck them down. Every club has had a few over the years.

One of those was West Perth centre half forward Brian Adamson.

A brilliant high mark, Adamson was easily distinguishable on the field because of his frizzy hairstyle. Although he was a player with marking and ball skills, he wasn’t backward in the physical stakes either. Despite not being overly big for a key position player, he never took a backward step, which served him well, given the presence of a few tough defenders around in the seventies, such as Glendinning, Hunter , Grljusich, and Green.

Brian Adamson was an instant success with West Perth after coming from South Perth in 1975. He slotted straight into the key forward role in the Cardinals combination that went on to take the flag that year in a record breaking grand final win. He was also an immediate favourite with the crowd at Leederville, with the catchcry of “higher than the cost of living” resounding around the Tech School end whenever that unmistakeable hairdo flew above the pack.

He was headhunted to Norwood after only three years at the Cardinals, triggering a legal battle that would have far reaching consequences for the trading of players across the land. Eventually the court found for the player and Norwood, allowing Adamson to play in South Australia, which he did for two years before returning to West Perth. He was a key to Norwood’s 1978 flag, slotting five goals from centre half forward.

West Perth fans anticipating the return of their prodigal son were to be largely disappointed. Injury was to stalk the former aerialist over the remaining four years of his career and he was forced to retire in 1984, a shadow of his former self.

Brian Adamson played a total of 145 games for West Perth and Norwood. At a stage of a career which was ready to blossom into champion status he was cut down. He was his club’s leading goalkicker in 1978 and 1981.

High Flyers are seldom forgotten, and Adamson certainly isn’t at West Perth.
