Not sure if i read simewhere that these players would become available to their WAFL clubs for finals if not required by the AFL club? Can anyone clarify this?

Apparently so Jjim....the chances of Carlton playing finals is nil so maybe he can come back for WAFL finals.

From the AFL website...

How will state league clubs be compensated for losing a player?

It's understood AFL clubs will be made to provide them with a reimbursement. That could include a payment of up to 50 percent of any sign-on bonus given to the player by their state league club.

The League has also moved to offset state league clubs' concerns by introducing a number of conditions.

A player drafted from a state league will not be asked to play against their original club unless all parties agreed. For example, should Williamstown defender Sam McLarty be selected by Carlton, he will not be allowed to represent the Blues' VFL-affiliated Northern Blues against Williamstown, unless the Seagulls approve.

State league players also have the ability to return to their original club to participate in finals if their AFL club's season is over.

Very happy for Josh Deluca, he has worked very hard to get a second chance and whether it works out or not, at least he has been given the opportunity.
Great for young Mayo as well but it would have been nice to see a bit more of him at Subi before we eventually lost him.
Deluca's departure means we are now missing two of our dominant midfielders from last year with Chris (the Rolls Royce) Phelan retiring after the GF to move to Melbourne for work.
Horse and Kitch are our real A-graders still left but whilst we have handy others such as Walters, Newton, Hoskins, Powell, Moore and perhaps Marsh, an injury to Horse or Kitch would be significant.
Hopefully those others can fill the breach along with some ressies boys stepping up such as Leach, Hickmott, Lawrence, Fullgrabe.
Another who could slot in is Justin Joyce, who has had knee surgery and told me his knee is now feeling the best it has for two years and he will be back playing either this week or the one after..

what good is that clause if you don't make the finals in part because you have lost the said player?

Ocker, given we have a good number of quality defenders on the list could you see Gus moving into the mids, he has a big tank, pace, good skills and is pretty fearless at the contest and a big body. I think he would be great in the middle. Also look at Kennedy who does the occasional stint in the mids, had a shocker against Souths but no orphan there, was much better v Tiges, I think his skills are good enough as is his tank and he is utterly fearless. Some food for thought.

Good thought SS about Gus and Kennedy as they both would have the credentials but I'd be a bit reluctant to play around with such a tightly knit defensive unit that has definitely allowed us to defend modest scores many times over.

Was just thinking that with the addition of Marsh and with Rhode and Latham back from injury we could spare a Litherland or Kennedy to boost the mids. But your spot on with the loss of 2 of the comps very best mids in Phez & Deluca. It's obvious we are missing Phez's pinpoint disposal this year, the forwards are not getting the precise delivery like past seasons.
