as long as I am an Anglo-Saxon, and, speaking English, I will be using 'fremantle' in the same way as I will always refer to Germany as Germany rather than Deuschland. It is very straight forward

I don't see a problem with dual names for the sake of recognizing a traditional Aboriginal name for the area. I think there are quite a few suburbs originating from Aboriginal language anyway.
Joondalup, Coolbellup, Marangaroo, Wanneroo, Jindalee, Koongamia etc...

That may be right in relation to the suburbs you've named DD but why do we need dual names when Fremantle is recognised the world over? Will we also get the English translation for Coolbellup and have dual names for that as well given it's in the Freo district? It sounds to me like Pettitt and his fellow looney left just wanting to get their names in the paper and big note themselves to other tree hugging, wipe your bum on a gum leaf, lesbian whale loving, Roe 8 hating nutcases.

NZ have been doing this for years. There are dual place names recognising Maori culture as a gesture of reconciliation. The sky hasnt fallen in there and people can still use the English name. Big fuss about nothing.

If the ALP state government starts going down this path, they will lose the next election on it.
Incidentially, if the PAC in South Africa one day has its way and re-names the country 'Azania', you will konw the lunantics have taken over the asylum.

Ark Philippines President wants to rename the Philippines Maharlika which apparently former Philippines dictator Ferdinand Marcos wanted to "revive" referring to the noble language of the Philippines before it was colonised by the Spanish. He's a very popular president but I think he will divide the country if he tries to go down that path.

DD: good one -- it will be intersting to see what happens; it is perfect for the locals if the majority support it; everyone outside the country can continue to call it by its Spanish name

I would think there's more people of Italian descent than Aboriginal living in the Freo area so maybe they should think about translating it into Italian whilst there at it. I can see me now telling the missus I'm popping down to watch Subi play South Walyalup at Walyalup Oval... FMD...when is this PC crap going to stop.

ANZAC Day at Freo Oval was a farce this year, the entire ceremony was in Aboriginal Language and ceremony, I just don't get the point of it on ANZAC Day , there is no special place in ANZAC for Aboriginal Soldiers , they were just one of many that served, I wish they would just get back to basics with a language we all understand , it totally ruined the day.

Disagree Bazz , bit of a long bow stating the whole ANZAC day ceremony in Aboriginal Language. I was there and it seemed like Aboriginal language followed by the English version.
The only downside to the day was the poor crowd and the poor sound quality as you couldn't hear the entire ceremony.
Great initiative as someone as rightly pointed out in a later post NZ have been doing this for years as a guesture of Reconciliation? English name plus Maori name?

That doesn't mean it's right...and besides...Maori's represent 15% of the NZ population...Aborigines less than 3% here. Chinese make up just under 4% of the population so let's do it in Mandarin as well.
