We now import 12,000 cars a month here. That we use to build here
12,000 cars by $35,000 per car =420,000,000 a month.
420,000,000 by 12 months =$5,040,000,000 .5 Billion to our balance of payments debt every year.
On Tony Abbots thinking we all be in horse+cart.Every country finances + protects there car industry apart from Australia.

Mate...there has always been tariffs on motor vehicles imported into Australia and still is today. The general rate is 5% and some cop an additional $12,000 per vehicle depending on type and age. It's only in the last few years that cars coming from countries where we have a free trade agreement such as Japan have dropped to zero but that happened well after our car industry went bust.

The biggest reason the Austalian car industry failed here was because, we stopped buying them, if you look at the domestic sales of car Holden and Ford were shrinking so much that they became unsustainable, they failed to adjust to market tastes and people prefer the OS product as its better quality and give them what they want, Commodores and Falcons do not cut it anymore , it all about the SUV, look at Australias number one care its the Mazda CX5..

You often hear this argument about Gov Subs for OS car industries, like how Germany gives them etc, well there is a hug difference, the German Car Industry turns a profit where as ours was consistently losing money..there is a point where car makers just close down and move.

Have a look at Honda in the UK, the Swindon plant went from 250,000 cars a year 15 yrs ago to closing in 2023, because the market changed, people have stopped buying the models and diesel engines will be phased out soon. The UK Gov chucked a heap at it and Toyota but when its not viable they go. Tbh the return to tax payers is dubious as well. In the US the Gov made GM and Ford pay back the entire bail out fund.

And as BC states we have very high "luxury" car tariffs already.

The LCT is another thing again over and above the general 5% on most cars. It's 33% on vehicles over $66k or $75k for fuel efficient cars based on the difference in their landed cost in Australia and the threshold.

I'm pretty sure you can't drive a Diesel commercial in Paris between 9am to 5pm.NOx emissions.
The luxury car tax is just a greedy tax grab.
The Button plan. They where building the cars Au government asked them to build.

The car industries came here because of the high tariffs, there were six car makers here when I was kid in the early 1980s. What finished them off, at least Holden, was the Central Bank's decison to run a higher interest rate policy relative to the rest of the the West which forced the dollar up and made them uncompetitive. Since then, with the lowerring of interest rates, they could compete again at current exchange rates.

We would not have had a car industry here without the tariff.

It is so easy to take some threads on a completely different tack.
We live in a time where intelligent people are being silenced so stupid people won't be offended

Not having an Australian owned car manufacturer was allways a problem also.In the late 90's Holden wanted to build a Landcruiser competitor. And Detroit canned the idea. And made then import a big sales flop called the Suburban.
