The Hopman Cup LOL was just a Mickey Mouse practice session for the AO.
As for cricket, basketball, soccer (50k at GF last year) they are on week in week out from the end of the footy season to the start of the next not just for a few weeks in January.
The ratings for the cricket night sessions from Perth & Adelaide rated very highly actually.
Is tennis even played outside the Western Suburbs these days? Heading the same way as Squash in to the minor leagues!

correct bease: The Hopman Cup was just an exhibition, where players might have tried a bit for the first set, but it got crowds because it was unique especially in it early days. Don't forget, that german woman graf, only turned up here because of the dolphians not because of the tennis.

Where is Swan 42?

We all know it wasn't a Grand Slam it never was meant to be , but it was a great invitation event for stars to prepare for the AO,and the international aspect got the crowds in. Its a real shame the state lost it, gone for good, along with the Heineken Classic, which was another big crowd puller.

It never ceases to amaze me how negative some Perth people are about some of these events, they bag no wonder we have lost so many. Golf, Tennis, Motor Sports, list goes on and on.

Fark me Basketball and Soccer aren't even summer sports they have to play them in summer to get some oxygen.

Test TV ratings are on the slide like crowds.

LOL the recent NZ Test series was the highest crowds since 1975/76 outside of Ashes Tests.
Perth (over 80k), Melbourne (over 200k) & Sydney (over 110k) all smashed AUS vs NZ Test crowd records and all didnt make it into a 5th day.
Hows the tennis crowds going LOL!!!

tennis is supported mainly by the middle class
came across a few tennis fans at university which is revealling in itself
at home and at school I do not re-call one conversation about the tennis among the working class males with whom I frequented, or, for that matter the fairer sex
bear in mind that the working class is the biggest cohort in the population

PS tennis was bigger when it was just an Anglo Saxon sport and they could go on about Laver and the others and success in the Davis Cup.

Nup, we were working class to the core. And everyone played tennis, going way back to grandparents as well, who played at the public courts at Pt Walter ( grass and still there). A very popular summer sports good thing was it was something everyone could play men women kids and mixed as well.

Growing up in Beaconsfield there were Tennis Courts you could hire ( bitumen on South Street) in the suburb, you paid the bloke next door, there was also courts up at the parish school you could use for free, there were also courts in South Freo, out at East Freo which at the time was working class there were courts all over the place. Arthur Marshall say no more...

Jimmy Matison a premiership player for SFFC daugher made it to Wimbleton semi finals based at Freo Tennis Club and it was pretty working class. That was early 70s.

Got to remember Australia dominated the scene in the 50s - 70s so it was right up there among the public.

Yvonne Golagong wasnt exactly middle class was she?

LOL gee how far do you want to go back that was 50 or more years ago?....Hockey & Squash were popular sports once upon a time too but a time long gone now much like tennis.
I went to school in the 1980s & 90s in a working class area and I can categorically say tennis was not even on the radar for sports at that time it was all football, cricket, basketball or soccer (mostly for those born in UK/Europe) for the boys & netball for the girls.
