That doesn't mean it's right...and besides...Maori's represent 15% of the NZ population...Aborigines less than 3% here. Chinese make up just under 4% of the population so let's do it in Mandarin as well.

BC what has Chinese or Mandarin got to do with Australian place names? Aboriginal Australians are exactly that, not about percentages it's about recognition and Reconciliation ?

BC wrote: That may be right in relation to the suburbs you've named DD but why do we need dual names when Fremantle is recognised the world over? Will we also get the English translation for Coolbellup and have dual names for that as well given it's in the Freo district? It sounds to me like Pettitt and his fellow looney left just wanting to get their names in the paper and big note themselves to other tree hugging, wipe your bum on a gum leaf, lesbian whale loving, Roe 8 hating nutcases.

Perfectly described BC.

Because if its going to mean something to less than 3% of the population then why bother unless of course it's just a feel good exercise for Pettitt and the looney left. I don't mind local landmarks which are of cultural significance having dual names but entire suburbs and the Swan River????....that's lunacy and fortunately Sneakers McGowan and most other councils agree.

Yes mate...but will it rise over Walyalup or Fremantle? If Pettitt has his way I know which one it will be and the PC brigade will be slapping themselves on the back and saying what a great thing they've done for reconciliation whilst the indigenous people living on the streets in Freo will be saying WTF?...and the shop owners away from the Cappo Strip struggling to make ends meet will be saying WTF?...and the youth of Freo without a job will be saying WTF is the council focusing on this crap when the city has far more serious issues in play? You'd be forgiven Dwert for asking why do I get cranked up when I see this sort of thing and I'd say that's a fair question. It's because I grew up in Freo and lived in and around it for 55 years and I see a city in decay with a council that worries about PC issues more so than getting the place back on its feet. As I said earlier, I travel through Freo every working day going home and it's dirty, full of drunks and deros, businesses closed on every street with the exception of the Cappo strip and around Notre Dame Uni, and a city that is not safe at night...that's why I take this council to task when it focuses on irrelevant crap rather than things that truly matter.

I'm not sure where you live Dwert and I could be wrong but I'm guessing it's not Freo.
