The dual citizenship issue left Shorten exposed. From the start Shorten insisted Labor MPs were secure, the party had a superior vetting process and it had no dual citizens. This was repeated almost daily by all ALP frontbenchers. Labor believed its own propaganda. Much of the early debate was about the Greens and senior Coalition politicians, Barnaby Joyce, Matt Canavan, Fiona Nash and then John Alexander. Labor’s aggression was fierce. It sensed, as did commentators, this might terminate the government. Overreach and overkill became the staple.

As Attorney-General Christian Porter said after last week’s High Court decision finding against Labor’s Katy Gallagher, the court did not make “a reinterpretation or a change of the law”. It stuck by the terms of last year’s Canavan decision. Reviewing the past eight months Porter said Shorten had “deliberately mischaracterised” previous High Court decisions and had “misled Australians for months” as part of a “cynical delaying tactic”.

Labor dual-citizen MPs took their salaries and entitlements and sheltered behind a false view of the law Labor endlessly propounded. It was a sham that fell dismally short of honouring constitutional obligations. Shorten displayed the same trait as during the Medicare issue, unjustified overkill revealing a credibility gap. The assurances about his MPs were false.

Bazza you overview of the man is spot on.

Shorten would sell his shadow if he thought it represented an imperfect reflection of himself!

Just to keep the record straight - it ain't Bazza's overview.

It has been shamelessly lifted word for word from the Murdoch rag known as The Un-Australian - and without attribution of course.

JS Bazza also has completely forgotten about what the former President of the Senate did when he found out he was ineligible to sit in the Senate. This was the person who was supposedly the custodian of the rules of one of the houses of parliament. Mind you the precedent about ignoring the principles of President and Speaker was set well and truly by the disgraceful Bronwyn Bishop.

He also conveniently ignores M Turnbull's "the high court will so hold" comment.

Bazza the President of the Senate is the one who is responsible for ensuring that the rules are adhered to in the running of the Senate. He knew he was ineligible to sit in the Senate let alone to be the President of the Senate and he DID NOT RESIGN as soon as he was aware of his ineligibility. You can obfuscate, divert as much as you like Bazza but it does not change the fact that what the President of the Senate did was FAR, FAR WORSE than anything Bill Shorten has done or said on this matter.
