You are re-living early 60s values, Leather.

It was only a decade later that a GG shagged a whole government, and parliamentary democracy along with it.

...and the Australian voting public subsequently supported the GG's decision by throwing Gough out by what was at the time a record majority.

Of course the Whitlam government, elected in 1974, had 2 years to run before they were due to face the people again.

I believe that is what is known as democracy.

Imagine the hoo-ha today if Sir Slouched Hat Thingy-Me-Bob got the order from the Palace (time to release the correspondence) and Langley, to toss out Truffles.

yes you're quite correct jack....the people giveth government and the people take it away...it's called democracy. it was the voting public that gave Gough the flick...not the GG. He and his cronies could have been re-elected but the Whitlam government was so dysfunctional the people had enough after being elected and sworn in on 5 December 1972 he was given the elbow December 1975....good riddance.

Anch: Gough was the son of the Commonwealth Solicitor General, Kerr on the other hand, was the son of a boiler maker. Gough went to grammer school, Kerr to a high school. Both were long standing members of the ALP, and of course, Gough appointted Kerr as the GG.

The history part is almost correct, AR - except that Fred Whitlam was the Commonwealth Crown Solicitor, rather than the Solicitor General. Two rather different beasts.

However, I am not sure how that is relevant to the judicial/royal coup of 1975.

ps I was talking in my previous post about current incumbent of Yarralumla House.

jack: its relavant to 1975 because too many people believe that Gough was sacked by a Tory right winger, a myth he never bothered to correct throughout his life.
