MrAFL
Whilst ruckman/forwards are good additions to any team and us having one would be great but imo we still need a genuine forward and a quality ruckman.

Key forwards don’t necessarily have to be tall,Brenton Cooper kick 90 goals he wasn’t overly tall but this type of forward needs good delivery something we are not great at so the taller. Kpp is a better option, delivery still has to good but at least if it’s bombed in a tall has a better chance of taking the grab.

For to many years we rob Peter to pay Paul and the structure we need right now is specialist key personnel.

30+ if you are saying that we should NOT get a forward cum ruckman or vice versa I couldn’t agree more. If we do that we will end up with neither!!

Mr AFL wrote: Was thinking the other day on how to fix our forward line issues. While a 50 plus goal a year marking key forward would be ideal, Mason Shaw, Tom Lee and Tyler Keitel are the only consistent tall forwards over the last three years. Most clubs operate with a makeshift forward line who rely on multiple players kicking goals each week.

Anyways on to my point, we have plenty of talent down in the forward 50 but in my opinion are missing a player like a Clancy Wheeler. Get someone like him into the forward line and a player like Fraser McInnes who can play up forward or in the ruck and the structure of the side looks a lot better.

I agree with Mr AFL. That's the modern game.

I reckon if we had a ruckman come forward or vice versa we would still need a quality number one ruckman as well as a KP forward.

Your number 2 ruckman can always be that makeshift guy as long as the number one is quality

For example if you had a Sandilands as your number one then you could go a McInnes as your number 2 being a forward/ruck

I reckon we need, in order:
A key forward
A key forward
A key forward

So much would fall into place if we had one.

You can argue that ‘power forwards’ have gone out of the game on some select stats but I doubt it. Ok the Bernie Naylor has been won with some embarrassing totals recently but historically you need 70+ to win it. It’s not the game’s fault those type of players aren’t around. If you left Keitel, for instance, at FF permanently he wouldn’t kick 90 cos he is not consistent enough, not because of the way the games played. We need to get someone who can give us 60+. They are out there.

In all honesty, we need to keep attracting, developing and retaining quality players whatever their shape, size or role.

Whether that be ex-Perth players coming out of the AFL system like David Myers, some of our talented juniors coming through in the colts or players elsewhere in the football landscape. That's what separates us still from those above us as our reserves and colts ladder positions attest.

Yes we need a ruckman but the club's been on the hunt for one of these for a few years now.

Retention not so much of a problem in recent years. Although I would like to know about more about where Levien and scotney are.

Recruitment of very decent players not a problem either, Lague, rog, Gibba, Bryan, coniglio, yeo, Jones.

Most available afl pfc delisted come back , narrier, tayls, most recently.

What we need are the marquee recruits. If we can get one or two of the right ones we will win more than lose next year simple as that.

I think we need more than just a couple of marquee recruits, but it's very hard to find them. Trouble is that Subi, EP, and SD at the very least, are going to be looking for quality players. We tend - probably by necessity rather than choice - to target fringe players from other clubs. Sometimes it works well, like with Gibba, but guys like Lague, Bryan, etc are handy but won't take us to the next level. I know we can't compare us to Subi given their obvious advantages, but their recruits are elite, not just handy: Litherland, Lockyer, Dela, Kitchin, Marsh and others. McInnes would be a good one point get, but we need at least 3 others.

I agree. McInness would be a good get as backup ruckman and resting up forward. Benefit only 1 point player.
We must have a main target to kick 60-70 goals and an elite ruckman who can also go forward. Get these two and we have the small forwards to back them up.
Then we need two mids. We are losing CJ so we need a tough inside clearance winner and a quick outside mid to run the lines.
So, that is 5 recruits total 41 points.
That leaves points for a tall defender preferably a well built CHB, say another 10 pts, 6 recruits in all. A tall order but we must go for it. Nothing ventured.....?
I will be happy if we manage 4 in year 1 (2020).

There's plenty of tall timber at EF!
Griffin. Sandilands. Watson. Cronan. Loersch. Strnadica. Bonomelli.....the list goes on- land of the giants!

Funnily enough- we couldn't get a Ruck or Key Forward for years. Takes those big fellas a while but we were lucky enough to get Big Griff back for a couple of years- hopefully he goes around next year.

Corey Byrne will be like a new recruit for you guys next year- he seems to have missed a lot of footy this year.
